See inside a model of the $50,000 tiny home Elon Musk lives in: Boxabl now has a waitlist of 47,000 people
The tiny house revolution is sweeping across the country. As more and more people are embracing a sustainable lifestyle, tiny homes have become a popular alternative to the classic family home or apartment.
In June, Las Vegas-based tech startup Boxabl made headlines after it was revealed that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk bought the company’s 375-square-foot prefab tiny home. Thanks to Elon Musk, today the Las Vegas-based startup Boxabl says it now has a waitlist of 47,000 customers, and over 2,000 of them have already put down a deposit.
It all started a little over a year ago after Musk, with a net worth of over $160 billion, pledged to sell almost all his physical possessions and own no house. In a tweet on May 1, 2020, Musk said: “I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house.”

Musk kept his and decided to live in a $50,000 house at Starbase, Texas, where his private space company, SpaceX, is manufacturing its Starships.
In June, Musk tweeted:
“My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though. Only house I own is the events house in the Bay Area. If I sold it, the house would see less use, unless bought by a big family, which might happen some day.”

The prefabricated home was designed by Boxabl Casita, a Las Vegas-based tech startup that is revolutionizing the housing markets by reducing construction costs by 40% and build times by 80%. We featured Boxabl back in November 2018 when the startup began the prototype production of a fireproof home system referred to by the company as the “Universal Building Box.”
Musk’s housing unit is foldable and designed for quick installations and maximum affordability. The 20×20 unit reportedly owned by Musk is priced at only $50,000, less than the cost of a Model Y Long Range Dual Motor AWD.
The Boxabl Casita is durable and it’s made of concrete panels and steel. It could be installed very quickly and transported easily, as well, with the home being light enough to be pulled by a vehicle like a Model X.
