Jeff Bezos steps down as Amazon’s CEO exactly 27 years after he founded the company
Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos officially stepped down today as CEO exactly 27 years after he founded the company that changed e-commerce and online shopping forever. Former AWS executive Andy Jassy has taken over as the CEO of the commerce giant.
According to information on the company’s website, Jassy is now the President and CEO of Amazon.com and also serves on the Board of Directors. Before taking over as the CEO, Jassy founded and led Amazon Web Services (AWS) from its inception and served as its CEO from April 2016 until July 2021.
Bezos founded Amazon on July 5, 1994, in Bellevue, Washington. Today, Amazon is one of the five trillion-dollar tech companies along with Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was raised in Houston and later in Miami.
He attended Princeton University in New Jersey and graduated in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. He worked on Wall Street between 1986 to early 1994 before he founded Amazon in late 1994.
Today, Bezos is the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of more than $200 billion as of June 2021. Many attribute the success of Amazon to Bezos’s unusual management style and relentless drive to ensure customers are happy at any cost. In Bezos’ words, “The number 1 thing that has made us successful by far is obsessive-compulsive focus on the customer as opposed to obsession over the competitor.” Bezos said he wanted to make sure that customers know what they’re paying for and receive enough value to justify the money.
