Anthropic launches Claude Tag in Slack, bringing its AI agent into team chats as workplace AI battle heats up
Anthropic is pushing deeper into the workplace with a new Slack-based AI agent that it hopes will turn Claude from a one-on-one chatbot into more of a teammate.
On Tuesday, the company launched Claude Tag, a new tool inside Salesforce’s Slack that lets employees bring Anthropic’s AI agent directly into group conversations by typing @Claude in a thread. Once called in, Claude can read the conversation, break down tasks, and surface relevant updates from across the organization, giving Anthropic a new way to plant its AI inside the daily flow of office work.
“Introducing Claude Tag, a new way for teams to work with Claude. In Slack, Claude joins as a team member with access to the channels and tools you choose. Tag Claude in and delegate tasks to it while you focus on other work,” Anthropic said in a post on X.
The launch lands at a moment when AI startups are racing to become more than just chat interfaces. The next contest is happening inside the software people already use to work, from messaging apps to email and internal tools. Anthropic is betting that if Claude can show up inside Slack like a co-worker, it has a better shot at becoming part of how teams actually operate, rather than remaining a separate assistant people open in another tab.
Claude Tag is rolling out in beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers. Anthropic said the tool will retain context over time and plans to bring the feature to other platforms later.
“Claude Tag is a new way for teams to work with Claude. We’re starting on Slack, which Claude can join as a team member. Grant Claude access to selected channels, and connect it to whichever tools, data—and even codebases—you choose. Then, anyone in the channel can tag @Claude in, and delegate tasks to it while they focus on other work. Claude builds context by remembering relevant information from the channels it’s in, and can plan out tasks to complete in the future,” Anthropic said on its website.
The move adds to Anthropic’s broader push into enterprise AI, a market that has become one of the most important battlegrounds in the industry. Businesses have emerged as a major source of demand for AI tools, and startups are now under pressure to show that their products can do more than answer questions. They need to fit into real workflows, integrate with workplace software, and save time in ways employees will actually use.
Anthropic says Claude Tag can do that by working within the conversation itself, rather than waiting for a user to open a separate Claude window and paste in context. The company said administrators will be able to tightly control the data and tools Claude Tag can access in each Slack channel, a point likely aimed at enterprise buyers worried about security and data sprawl.
Rob Seaman, general manager of Slack, framed the product as a shift away from private chatbot use and toward more visible collaboration inside teams. In a statement, he said the partnership is “making AI multiplayer. Instead of a private back-and-forth, Claude Tag shows up in the open.”
Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code, said the underlying capabilities were already there in some form, but the real change lies in how employees interact with the agent. “A lot of the capabilities did exist, but actually the form factor of being able to tag it the same way that you would a coworker is really powerful,” Wu said in an interview.
Wu offered one example from her own workflow. She said she gave Claude Tag access to her Gmail so it can read messages, flag when an important person writes to her, and then post those updates into Slack, where she said she is more likely to respond quickly. It is a small detail, but it shows what Anthropic is trying to do here: move Claude from a standalone assistant to a background system that watches, summarizes, and nudges employees within the tools they already use.
Anthropic said it plans to bring the feature to other platforms in the coming weeks, suggesting Claude Tag may be the start of a broader effort to turn Claude into a cross-workplace agent rather than just another chatbot window.
