Elon Musk says people can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin
Back in February, Tesla announced it bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin. The world’s largest electric automaker said it bought the bitcoin for “more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash,” according to the filing. In addition to the purchase, Tesla said it would start accepting payments in bitcoin in exchange for its products as well.
Now, that day has come. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced early this morning that anyone can now buy Tesla with Bitcoin. Musk also added that the Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency. Bitcoin spikes immediately after Musk’s announcement. With the bitcoin price hovering at about $57,000 at press time, that means you can buy a Tesla Model S for one bitcoin.
Below is the tweet Musk posted at 3:02 AM this morning.

In later tweets, Musk added that “Tesla is using only internal & open source software & operates Bitcoin nodes directly. Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency.”
