BYD unveils new hybrid that can drive non-stop for over 2,000 kilometers without recharging or refueling
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has unveiled an innovation that could shake the global auto market. Its latest advance isn’t a new car but a next-generation hybrid powertrain capable of traveling more than 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) on a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery. This means you can drive from New York to Miami on a full charge without recharging or refueling.
The new hybrid powertrain further shatters expectations for hybrid vehicles, typically known for offering good gas mileage but with a limited electric range. The move is seen as a direct challenge to established automakers like Toyota and Volkswagen, who are facing pressure to adapt to the growing EV market. The dual-mode plug-in electric hybrid can manage New York to Miami
The news comes a month after BYD announced its plans to launch its first electric pickup truck, intensifying its rivalry with global auto titans like Ford and Tesla. The midsize-to-large pickup, tailored for the global markets, marks BYD’s ambitious stride into the fiercely contested EV truck segment.
In a live-stream event on Tuesday, BYD said that the initial sedans will be priced at a competitive price of 100,000 yuan (around $13,800).
“The upgraded tech, which aims to put more distance between BYD and its rivals, will be launched in two sedans immediately that cost under 100,000 yuan ($13,800), the automaker said at an event live-streamed Tuesday evening from China,” Bloomberg reported.
While details are still emerging, experts believe BYD’s hybrid technology won’t stay confined to China for long. Expect to see these extended-range hybrids hit the export market soon, potentially offering drivers a compelling alternative to fully electric vehicles, especially for those who frequently tackle long distances, further intensifying the competition with rivals including Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG.
Founded in 1995 as “Build Your Dreams” (BYD), this influential Chinese conglomerate has gained prominence for its extensive portfolio across diverse industries. Beginning with a focus on rechargeable batteries, BYD swiftly rose to become a world leader in electric vehicle battery technology.
