UK’s chief scientific adviser corrected an earlier statement that “60% of those taken to hospital with COVID-19 have been vaccinated twice” after the video went viral
Earlier today, the UK government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said in a news briefing that “60% of hospitalized patients are double vaccinated.” He even went as far as to specifically explained why the 60% was so high.
But later this afternoon after his press conference went viral, Sir Vallance corrected himself, saying the original statistic was false. In a statement on Twitter, Sir Vallance said:
“Correcting a statistic I gave at the press conference today, 19 July. About 60% of hospitalisations from covid are not from double vaccinated people, rather 60% of hospitalisations from covid are currently from unvaccinated people.”

One Twitter user called Sir Patrick error “An absolutely bizarre “error” considering that you went on to explain exactly why the 60% figure was so high. This is all very odd and suspicious Thinking face.”

During the press conference, Sir Patrick said: “Vaccines are not 100% effective. They’re very very effective, but not 100%. As a higher proportion of the population is double vaccinated, it’s inevitable that those 10% of that very large number remain at risk and will therefore be amongst the people who both catch the infection and end up in hospital.”
