Delivery tech startup Gopuff continues its acquisition spree; buys Liquor Barn to accelerate its retail expansion
Thanks to vaccines, the economy is booming again and consumer spending is at a record high as more people leave home to buy services they were unable to buy during the lockdowns. The delivery space has also seen a big increase in customer demands.
One of the leading startups in the delivery space is Gopuff, a Pennsylvania, PA-based startup that delivers daily essentials and groceries in minutes across over 500 U.S. cities. Just last week, Gopuff acquired rideOS for $115 million to bolster its last-mile logistics. rideOS was founded in June 2017 by two founding members of Uber’s Advanced Technology Division on mapping and self-driving vehicle technology, rideOS builds cutting-edge transportation marketplace and mapping technologies.
Less than a week after the acquisition, Gopuff continues its acquisition spree this week with the purchase of Kentucky-based spirits, beer, and wine retailer Liquor Barn. The total amount of the transaction was not disclosed. Gopuff said the acquisition helps to accelerate the company’s expansion in Kentucky and also gives it 23 additional storefronts.
As we reported in March, Gopuff recently raised a whopping $1.5 billion at an $8.9 billion valuation. Since then, the company has expanded to California and internationally to the United Kingdom.
Gopuff is not the only player in the convenience delivery space. Over the past few years, Uber and DoorDash have also been expanding their footprints in the space. Last year, for example, Uber sold off money-losing units and acquired Drizly and Postmates to get into the lucrative delivery business.
Launched in 2013 by two college students Rafael Ilishayev and Yakir Gola while at Drexel University, the Pennsylvania, PA-based GoPuff delivers daily essentials and groceries in minutes across over 500 U.S. cities. The startup currently operates more than 250 micro-fulfillment centers servicing over 650 U.S. cities, in addition to the recently acquired BevMo! locations.
