California to ban the sales of gasoline-powered Internal Combustion Engine cars by 2035
The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars have had a great run. After over 130 years of existence, it seems the days are of gasoline-powered cars are numbered, at least in the state of California. In 1872, American George Brayton invented the first commercial liquid-fueled internal combustion engine. Then in 1876, Nicolaus Otto worked with Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, to patent the world’s first compressed charge, four-stroke cycle engine.
Now, California, a state with unreliable electricity, is now ordering all its citizens to drive cars that run on electricity by 2035. Yesterday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that bans the sales of new gasoline-powered cars in the state by the year 2035. The state of California said it will phase out gasoline-powered cars and drastically reduce demand for fossil fuel in California’s fight against climate change. The new executive order directs the state to require that, by 2035, all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California be zero-emission vehicles.
“This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change,” said Governor Newsom. “For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe. Californians shouldn’t have to worry if our cars are giving our kids asthma. Our cars shouldn’t make wildfires worse – and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn’t melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.”
The governor’s office also claimed that the transportation sector is responsible for more than 50% of California’s carbon pollution, 80 percent of smog-forming pollution, and 95 percent of “toxic diesel emissions.” In addition, the Zero-emission vehicles are a key part of California’s clean, innovative economy – already California’s second-largest global export market.

In a separate announcement on social media, Newsom said in a Twitter post:
California “is phasing out the internal combustion engine,” the governor tweeted in announcing his sweeping executive order. “By 2035 every new car sold in CA will be an emission free vehicle. Cars shouldn’t give our kids asthma. Make wildfires worse. Melt glaciers. Or raise sea levels.”
