Elon Musk teases a video of Tesla Model Y luxury SUV
Yesterday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted a video of the upcoming Tesla Model Y compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV). The Model Y is a fully electric small luxury SUV with seating for five people. The Model Y is is able to carry 7 passengers and their cargo. Tesla says an optional third-row seat (with seating for two more people) will be coming out in 2021.
Each second row seat folds flat independently, creating flexible storage for skis, furniture, luggage and more. The liftgate opens to a low trunk floor that makes loading and unloading easy and quick. Tesla first unveiled it in March 2019. The Model Y comes with a two-piece casted body that reduces weight and manufacturing complexities.
In addition to emergency braking, collision warning, blind-spot monitoring that come standard with all new Tesla cars, Model Y will lso have Full Self-Driving capability, enabling automatic driving on city streets and highways pending regulatory approval, as well as the ability to come find you anywhere in a parking lot.
Back in 2019, Musk said: “When we get the big casting machine, it’ll go from 70 parts to one with a significant reduction in capital expenditure.” Tesla is set to release a rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y Long Range this year.
The release would bring the compact SUV to an even lower price point than the current lowest of $49,990. Model Y is fully electric. It can go anywhere with up to 316 miles of range on a single charge.
