Tesla launches the first home charging station that can be mounted or plugged into a wall outlet; priced at $500
Yesterday, Tesla unveiled a new Wall Connector, a home and office charging solution with an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet. The new Wall Connector offers a 25 percent faster charge compared to the Gen 2 Mobile Connector, according to information on the product information page. The Connector uses an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet for an easy installation. No electrician required. You simply mount your Wall Connector to a wall or post and plug in.
The Connector provides 40 amps (9.6kW) of power for all Model S, Model X and Model 3 Long Range vehicles. Model 3 Mid Range and Standard Range vehicles will charge at 32 amps when using the 14-50 Wall Connector. It comes with dedicated 24′ cable for maximum flexibility
For people who already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet within reach of their parking spot or for those who don’t want to go into the trouble of installing a hardwired charging station, Tesla would simply recommend to use the mobile connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
Below is how Tesla describes the new product on its website:
“A Tesla 14-50 Wall Connector is your best charging solution with an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet. Offering a 25 percent faster charge compared to the Gen 2 Mobile Connector, the 14-50 Wall Connector is easy to use and convenient to install around your home or office.”
Here are a few images of the new Wall Connector with a 14-50 Plug:
The new version of the Wall Connector is the same price as the hardwired version: $500.
Tesla says it can charge most of its vehicles at up to 40 amps (9.6kW):
“Provides 40 amps (9.6kW) of power for all Model S, Model X and Model 3 Long Range vehicles. Model 3 Mid Range and Standard Range vehicles will charge at 32 amps when using the 14-50 Wall Connector.”
The automaker says that it has the advantage of not requiring an electrician installation, but that’s if you already have a NEMA 14-50 plug.
You can always buy the outlet and have an electrician install it before getting this new version of the Tesla Wall Connector.
