LuluLab, a Samsung beauty AI startup spin-off, raises new funding for its AI skincare solutions
It’s been a while since we covered LuluLab, an AI beauty startup spin-off of Samsung Electronics’ in-house venture program. Back in April 2019, LuluLab unveiled its AI skincare solutions designed for the Middle Eastern market at the Beautyworld Middle East, the largest beauty expo in the Middle East.
Today, LuluLab announced it has closed an undisclosed amount in Series B funding led by Netmarble, Korea’s leading game developer, as well as from other companies. Other backers include L&C Bio, Global Medical Research Center, and CTK Investment.
Founded in 2017, LuluLab is the developer of Lumini, a personalized AI skincare assistant that analyzes the user’s skin and recommends the best products and services for each user. Lumini examines the facial skin based on six categories: wrinkles, pores, acne, sebum, melasma, and redness simply by taking a photo of the face. Lumini also features an intelligent chatbot within the mobile app that logs and analyzes the user’s lifestyles. It then combines all relevant data to provide a comprehensive skin analysis along with accurate skincare recommendations.
Lumini is the first brainchild of lululab, the 22nd spin-off company from Samsung Electronics. Lululab is already being recognized in the beauty industry. In 2019, the company received the Innovation Award at CES 2019 and was named the winner of the skincare category at Cosmoprof Asia 2018.
lululab has developed the AI skincare assistant LUMINI, which scans users’ faces, analyzes skin conditions, and recommends skincare products tailored to specific skin profiles within 10 seconds. Recently the company launched the LUMINI Kiosk, a smart mirror that provides customized skincare services. As the first of its kind in the beauty industry, it employs AI technology based on multinational and multiracial skin data to analyze the skin and provide recommend products that are optimized for individual skin needs.
Yongjoon Choe, CEO of lululab, said, “We will accelerate the distribution of AI-based, contact-free beauty solutions,” he added. “With this investment, we plan to expand our business in the skin analysis and beauty sectors and to evolve into a provider of solutions for skin-related conditions and diseases.
