iScout: Affordable heads-up display
Let’s face facts, most people are distracted by their smartphones while driving. And most people are distracted while going out to eat, working or any simple task. However, the most dangerous aspect is getting behind the wheel of any vehicle and looking at your phone while driving. According to the CDC, there are three (3) main types of distraction:
Visual: taking your eyes off the road.
Manual: taking your hands off the wheel.
Cognitive: taking your mind off of driving.
A company called Spade Techs has a product called iSCOUT which can not only assist with driver distraction, the use of it can save lives. iSCOUT is a patent pending Heads-Up Display (HUD). It projects all the information you would want while driving such as speed, fuel level, GPS navigation as a floating virtual image in front of you. This allows you to focus on the road in front of you. iSCOUT syncs to your smartphone and displays incoming calls, messages, reminders, social media content and other notifications along with several other features such as blind-spot view (on premium models) and an integrated dash cam. iSCOUT is powered from your car through the on-board diagnostics (OBD II) port. Then you download the app for iOS or Android and the installation is done.
One of the ways that iScout allows you to stay focused in by using simple hand gestures. For example, if you have an incoming call, you simply swipe your hand to the left to accept a call or swipe to the right to reject the call. You are not touching the heads-up display to do this, you are moving your hand in front of your body.
If your vehicles low fuel light/indicator comes on, iScout will immediately search for the closest gas station for you. iScout wants to take safety to the next level and with their heads-up display. According to the company, recent researches show that it takes lesser time for a driver to get this information from a HUD as opposed to looking at a conventional display (phone screen/GPS device) as it takes considerably lesser time for the eye to shift focus from the road to the display and back. This ensures that the driver’s attention is on the road and therefore reduces the risk of accidents.
