A $10 Domain Just Sold to Elon Musk for $174,000 After SpaceXAI’s Surprise Rebrand
SpaceXSI.com sold for $174,000
A domain registered for roughly $10 a little more than a year ago has reportedly sold for $174,000 after Elon Musk announced plans to rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, turning an obscure web address into what could become the exact-match domain for one of Musk’s biggest companies.
According to WHOIS records, SpaceXSI.com was registered on July 25, 2025. At the time, there was no SpaceXSI company and no public indication suggested Musk planned to use the name. More than 14 months later, that registration appears to have produced an extraordinary return.

On Wednesday, the @domain account on X announced that SpaceXSI.com had sold for $174,000 through domain registrar and marketplace Spaceship, identifying Elon Musk as the buyer. TechStartups has not independently confirmed the buyer’s identity or final purchase price through SpaceX or Spaceship.

What can be independently verified is nearly as striking. Just days before the reported sale, SpaceXSI.com was publicly listed through Spaceship with a $174,888 Buy Now price. SpaceX SI
The timing turns what might otherwise be another six-figure domain sale into a remarkable bet on where technology branding was headed.
Quick timeline: From AI to SI to a $174,000 domain
September 29, 2026: President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” across official communications, websites, reports, and other non-statutory federal documents. The order applies to the executive branch, not private companies.
October 4: Musk embraced the terminology on X, writing, “No more AI. SI. It’s better.” Asked whether SpaceXAI would become SpaceXSI, Musk responded: “Yes, we will make that change.” Reuters reported the planned rename the same day.

October 5: SpaceXSI.com was still listed for sale. The Register reported that Musk had announced the SpaceXSI name but had given no date for the corporate change, pointing out that the matching .com remained available for purchase.
October 7: @domain announced on X that the domain had sold for $174,000 through Spaceship, reportedly to Musk.
That sequence means SpaceXSI.com existed long before the federal terminology change and Musk’s subsequent rebrand announcement. The domain’s July 2025 creation date is recorded in the registry data, making this less a case of someone registering the name after Musk tipped his hand and more an unusually well-timed speculative registration
At roughly $10 to register, a $174,000 sale represents about 17,400 times the original registration cost, before renewal fees, marketplace commissions, or other expenses.
The episode shows how quickly language can create digital real estate value. “SpaceXSI” meant little to most people when the .com was registered. A presidential order changed the federal vocabulary around AI. Musk adopted that vocabulary days later. Suddenly, the six-letter addition to SpaceX carried direct corporate significance.
For the domain’s owner, the bet appears to have paid off spectacularly.
For Musk, $174,000 would be tiny next to the billions SpaceX is now discussing for AI infrastructure. Yet for whoever registered SpaceXSI.com in July 2025, one inexpensive domain may have just turned into a six-figure payday.
The trademark risk behind the windfall
The sale came with an obvious legal risk. SpaceX is already a protected trademark, and domains that incorporate established brands can face challenges under ICANN’s cybersquatting rules. SpaceX has defended its trademarks in prior disputes. SpaceXSI.com was registered more than a year before Musk publicly announced the SpaceXSI name, which makes the timing unusual, but the underlying SpaceX brand was already well established.

Update (October 8, 2026): Richard Kirkendall, founder of Namecheap and Spaceship, has publicly confirmed reports surrounding the sale of SpaceXSI.com. Responding to an October 7 post on X stating that the domain had been sold to Elon Musk’s xAI after being listed for $174,000 on Spaceship, Kirkendall replied with a single word: “real.” The domain-sales database NameBio also reported the $174,000 transaction. Kirkendall’s acknowledgment adds significant weight to the reported sale and its connection to Musk’s company.
