Cursor launches Origin, a code hosting platform built for AI coding agents with GitHub sync
Cursor is coming for a bigger piece of the software development stack.
The AI coding company today launched Origin, a native code hosting platform that brings repositories, pull requests, reviews, merges, and CI connections directly into Cursor. The move puts Cursor into territory long dominated by GitHub and signals that the company sees its future extending far beyond the AI code editor that made it famous.

Origin is rolling out in beta to paid Cursor users. Developers can sync existing GitHub repositories into the service, giving teams a relatively low-friction way to try the platform without immediately abandoning their current GitHub setup.
A video accompanying the launch shows a unified dashboard with a Codebase tab, pull request reviews, merging, and integrations with CI and deployment providers including Vercel, Buildkite, and Depot.
The larger bet centers on AI agents.
Cursor describes Origin as code hosting built for “agent scale,” an important distinction from simply building another GitHub clone. AI coding agents are beginning to take on larger development tasks, creating branches, modifying multiple files, opening pull requests, responding to feedback, and iterating on code. Owning the repository layer could give Cursor much tighter control over that workflow.
The timing makes the launch especially significant. Origin arrives just days after SpaceX officially completed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor on August 14, two months after announcing the deal. The transaction brought one of the fastest-growing AI coding companies under Elon Musk’s SpaceX as the aerospace giant pushes deeper into AI and computing.
Before the acquisition, investor demand for Cursor had already reached extraordinary levels. CNBC reported earlier this year that the startup was in talks to raise $2 billion at a valuation above $50 billion, with Andreessen Horowitz expected to co-lead the round and Nvidia and Thrive Capital expected to participate.

And there’s a fascinating narrative underneath all of this: Cursor was reportedly preparing to raise at a $50B+ valuation, SpaceX bought it for $60B, and almost immediately afterward we’re seeing Cursor push beyond the editor into core developer infrastructure. That makes Origin feel much more consequential than a routine feature release.
Cursor wants more of the developer stack
GitHub remains deeply embedded in modern software development, making displacement a tall order. Origin does not need to replace GitHub overnight to matter.
For now, GitHub can remain the source of truth as repositories sync into Origin. That approach gives Cursor room to build an AI-native development layer around existing repositories before asking developers to make a more consequential switch.
The timing is hard to miss. Origin arrived as GitHub was dealing with a major service disruption, including problems affecting Actions and pull requests. That sparked jokes online about Cursor choosing an unusually convenient moment to introduce a GitHub alternative.
Yet the more consequential story is what Origin could become.
Cursor started as an AI-first coding editor. Native code hosting gives it another piece of the development lifecycle and creates a foundation for future AI features that can operate closer to repositories, pull requests, reviews, and deployment pipelines. If autonomous coding agents become a larger part of software engineering, the infrastructure built around human developers may need to adapt to software agents making changes at far greater frequency.
Cursor appears to want to build that infrastructure itself.
The company, formerly known as Anysphere, was founded in 2022 by MIT students Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger. It has since become one of the most closely watched companies in AI coding.
Origin marks another step in that evolution. Cursor is no longer positioning itself solely as the place where developers write code. It is beginning to build a platform where humans and AI agents can manage what happens to that code next.
That puts Origin on a much bigger collision course with GitHub than its beta label might suggest.
