OpenAI in talks to acquire AI coding assistant startup Windsurf for $3 billion

OpenAI is reportedly in discussions to acquire Windsurf, the AI coding startup formerly known as Codeium, for around $3 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the deal. If the deal goes through, it would be the company’s biggest acquisition yet.
OpenAI In Talks to Buy Windsurf for About $3 Billion
This move shows just how serious OpenAI is about growing beyond ChatGPT and getting deeper into developer-focused tools. Windsurf has been building momentum in that space, offering an AI-assisted coding experience that’s caught the attention of engineers and big companies alike.
“The deal would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date and help the company compete in the market for AI-driven coding assistants,” Bloomberg reported.
Windsurf last raised funding in 2023 in a round led by General Catalyst, which pegged its valuation at $1.25 billion. Altogether, the startup has raised more than $200 million in venture funding.
The deal could give OpenAI an edge as it looks to compete with other players in AI coding assistants, like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. More than that, it could bring in an experienced team, tech stack, and customer base that fits neatly into OpenAI’s broader strategy.
Neither OpenAI nor Windsurf has commented on the potential acquisition.
