Meta launches AI Studio, a new AI tool that lets users create custom AI characters

Meta Platforms on Monday announced the launch of AI Studio, a new AI tool that enables users to create, share, and design personalized AI chatbots. With AI Studio, anyone can craft an AI character tailored to their interests, and creators can develop AI extensions of themselves.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Meta’s release of Llama 3.1 405B, the latest iteration of its Llama AI model, renowned for its multilingual capabilities and cutting-edge performance metrics that stand toe-to-toe with leading industry models from OpenAI.

According to Meta, AI Studio is aimed at revolutionizing user interaction by enabling the creation of customized AI characters. For now, AI Studio is only available to users in the United States.

For Instagram creators, these AI personas can act as an extension of their digital presence, adept at handling common direct message queries and story responses, Meta revealed. Users will be able to share their AI creations across Meta’s vast array of social media platforms, enhancing engagement and interactivity.

“Anyone can create an AI character based on their interests, and creators can build an AI extension of themselves. Start chatting with these AIs in Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp,” Meta said on its website.

This new tool leverages the power of Meta’s Llama 3.1, the most advanced version of its largely free AI models. Llama 3.1, released just last week, supports multiple languages and delivers performance metrics that rival the paid models offered by competitors like OpenAI.

Meanwhile, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly working on a top-secret project codenamed “Strawberry.” As detailed in a Reuters exclusive earlier this month, the project underscores OpenAI’s commitment to proving the advanced reasoning capabilities of its AI models, although specific details remain tightly guarded even within the company.
