Twitter accused of double standard for banning Trump but not sitting US Senator who calls for Russian President Putin to be assassinated
As the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine reaches a new level, a sitting U.S. Senator has called on the Russian people to assassinate their own President.
In a tweet Thursday night, Sen. Lindsey Graham said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should be assassinated, suggesting it would be the only way to end the crisis between the two countries. Graham first made the statement during a TV show appearance. But Graham did not end there.
He also went on Twitter to double down on the call to kill Russian President Putin. Referencing both the betrayer of Julius Caesar and the architect of an unsuccessful 1944 plot to kill Adolf Hitler, Graham tweeted,
“Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country – and the world – a great service.”
Not sure what Graham was thinking but assassinating a sitting world leader is in violation of the US law and international law.

In a follow-up tweet, Graham added:
“The only people who can fix this are the Russian people. Easy to say, hard to do. Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate.”

Now, some Twitter users are calling out the social giant for its double standard. In January 2021, Twitter permanently banned Trump from its platform during the final days of his term. His handle @realDonaldTrump had over 88.9 million followers at the time.
One Twitter user that goes by the name Lauren Chen said this, “Trump got booted off Twitter, but literal calls for assassinations from politicians are fine I guess.”

This is not the first time Twitter has been accused of a double standard. In July 2020, Twitter was accused of censoring Trump but not Iran’s ayatollah who called for the genocide of Israel. Similar accusations were made in 2020 after Twitter allowed abusive and death wish posts upon former President Donald Trump following his COVID-19 diagnosis.
Meanwhile, an unearthed Twitter video also shows Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain & Amy Klobuchar in December 2016 telling Ukrainian troops that they would help #Ukraine make 2017 a “year of offense” against #Russia & it was time to make Russia “pay a heavier price.”
