Elon Musk tweets cryptic “X.com/x” message that leaves everyone guessing about his next project
Early this morning, Tesla and Space CEO Elon Musk tweeted a meme gif with a cryptic message that reads: “X.com/x.” A click on the link takes you to a page on the X.com website with just the letter “y.”
For those of you who don’t know or were not around in the early days of PayPal, X.com was a precursor to PayPal and an online bank founded by Elon Musk in November 1999. Then in March 2000, X.com merged with Confinity Inc., a software startup based in Silicon Valley.
X.com was one of the world’s first online banks, and deposits were insured by the FDIC. The company was initially funded by Elon Musk and Greg Kouri, who went on to fund Musk’s later ventures, Tesla, and his startup, SpaceX.
Musk was attracted to Confinity because of its easy payment system. The merged company changed its name to PayPal. eBay bought PayPal for US$1.5 billion in 2001. Musk later bought the domain back from PayPal in 2017.
However, no one thinks Musk is going to launch another online bank. That’s probably too lame for him. Here are some theories floating around on the internet. Some are saying SpaceX’s Starlink will become the new X.com when they start offering service. At this point, Musk is leaving everyone guessing about what project X.com will be used for.
