Uber is jumping on the dockless bike-share bandwagon with JUMP Bikes
In partnership with a e-bike company Jump, Uber announced today that it will begin offering bike-share options for users in San Francisco. This is part of a pilot by Uber to expand affordable, sustainable transportation options. “Starting next week, we’re taking another step towards our vision, by piloting Uber Bike by JUMP – a bike share option – in San Francisco. Riders in the pilot will be able to find and book a JUMP pedal assist electric bike directly from the Uber app,” the company said in a statement on its website
Uber customers who sign up for the pilot will be able to use Uber Bike by JUMP. To use the bike, users just need to tap the “bike” option in their app’s menu located at the top left corner of the home screen. For now, the pilot is only available to customers living in San Francisco. San Francisco residents who are interested in joining the pilot can join the Uber’s waitlist. Currently, there are only 250 JUMP bikes available in the city, this means Uber cannot guarantee access to all of their riders immediately. JUMP Bikes will be managing operations to ensure bikes are well-utilized and nearby when you need one, and maximizing the availability of bikes in the city.
In a separate post on Medium, JUMP Bikes CEO, Ryan Rzepecki, said: “Today, JUMP Bikes announced a new pilot program with Uber: Uber Bike by JUMP. Uber Bike by JUMP will open up access and create a seamless experience for residents of San Francisco to find and rent JUMP’s electric bicycles directly from the Uber app.
Our mission at JUMP Bikes is to build the bike you want. A bike that can take you farther, get you there faster, and be the most fun to ride. A bike that you don’t even need to own, doesn’t cost a penny to maintain, and is always nearby when you want it. If we achieve this mission then we’ll see more people on bikes — meaning greener, more accessible, and healthier cities.
With Uber Bike, we’re excited to offer JUMP’s e-bikes to Uber’s San Francisco users as a new and environmentally friendly option to explore and navigate their city.”
JUMP is bike share electrified. JUMP bikes are designed in New York City by people who love bikes and care about the future of our cities. JUMP Bikes has been shaping the future of bike share since 2010. JUMP is the first ever smart-bikes with integrated GPS, payment systems, and locks that kicked off the dockless revolution. They have 15,000 bikes in 40 different markets and clocked over 5 million rides since 2013.
