SpaceX soars to record $210 billion valuation, making it the second most valuable private company after ByteDance
SpaceX is selling insider shares at $112 apiece in a new tender offer, significantly boosting the company’s valuation to nearly $210 billion, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. This new valuation positions SpaceX as the second most valuable private company globally, trailing only ByteDance, which is valued at $268 billion.
SpaceX was previously valued at $180 billion during a transaction in December, as reported by Bloomberg News.
The news comes just a day after SpaceX secured a nearly $1 billion NASA contract to decommission and deorbit the International Space Station (ISS) after its operational life in 2030. The contract is a significant endorsement of SpaceX’s capabilities and future prospects.
The decision to price the current tender offer above the $200 billion valuation discussed last month is attributed to robust investor demand. This transaction allows employees and insiders to sell shares at a premium price, reflecting the high interest from the investment community. Sources familiar with the matter, who chose to remain anonymous, told Bloomberg that the final terms of the share sale are still being negotiated, and the size of the tender offer might change based on the level of interest from potential sellers and buyers.
“SpaceX will sell insider shares at $112 apiece in a tender offer, a higher-than-expected price that boosts the value of Elon Musk’s space and satellite company closer to $210 billion, according to people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg reported.
Achieving a $210 billion valuation is a record for an American private company, yet it remains below ByteDance Ltd.’s $268 billion valuation, the parent company of TikTok. With this new valuation, SpaceX is now comparable to some of the world’s largest publicly traded companies by market capitalization.
Founded by Elon Musk on March 14, 2002, SpaceX’s primary mission was to reduce space transportation costs and make space travel more economically feasible. The company has since made remarkable strides, including the development of the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Dragon spacecraft. SpaceX notably became the first private company to launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft.
Today, SpaceX is a leading player in the commercial spaceflight industry and one of the most valuable private companies worldwide. The company is engaged in several high-profile projects, including the Starship spacecraft, designed for reusability and aimed at transporting humans and cargo to the Moon and Mars. This ambitious project exemplifies SpaceX’s dedication to pushing the frontiers of space exploration.
