AMD launches new AI chips to challenge Nvidia
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on Monday unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) processing chips to take on industry leader Nvidia. The launch includes its 5th Gen AMD EPYC server processors and the Ryzen AI 300 series for mobile devices.
During the event at Computex 2024 technology trade show in Taipei, AMD’s chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su presented the company’s expanded roadmap for its Instinct product line of AI accelerators, emphasizing the company’s strategic focus on AI development over the next two years. The announcements highlighted several key products slated for release in 2024 and beyond.
Among the most anticipated is the MI325X accelerator, which will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. Additionally, the 5th Gen EPYC server processors are slated for a second-half 2024 release, with the CDNA 4 architecture making its debut in the Instinct MI350 series in 2025.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for AMD as the rapid and accelerating adoption of AI is driving increased demand for our high-performance computing platforms,” Dr. Su said. “At Computex, we were proud to be joined by Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, Asus and other strategic partners to launch our next-generation Ryzen desktop and notebook processors, preview the leadership performance of our next-generation EPYC processors, and announce a new annual cadence for AMD Instinct AI accelerators.”
“We are in the midst of a massive AI platform shift, with the promise to transform how we live and work. That’s why our deep partnership with AMD, which has spanned multiple computing platforms, from the PC to custom silicon for Xbox, and now to AI, is so important to us,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft. “We are excited to partner with AMD to deliver these new Ryzen AI powered Copilot+ PCs. We are very committed to our collaboration with AMD and we’ll continue to push AI progress forward together across the cloud and edge to bring new value to our joint customers.”
The competitive landscape in AI technology has driven a surge in demand for advanced processors capable of powering complex AI data centers. With its latest announcements, AMD is positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Nvidia, aiming to meet the burgeoning needs of generative AI applications.
Dr. Su’s presentation underscored AMD’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of AI processing, promising significant advancements in performance and efficiency. As the race to dominate the AI processor market intensifies, AMD’s latest innovations signal a new era of competition and technological progress.
Speaking alongside AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su at Computex 2024, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described the current AI era as “a massive platform shift, with the promise to transform how we live and work.” Nadella emphasized the significant impact of artificial intelligence on various facets of daily life and the workplace.
Nadella highlighted Microsoft’s own AI-driven Copilot software as a pivotal element in this transformative wave. “Whether you like it or not, Copilot is a key player in advancing this shift,” he stated, underscoring the software’s role in integrating AI capabilities into everyday applications.
As AI continues to evolve, leaders like Nadella are keen to stress the importance of embracing these changes to harness the full potential of this groundbreaking technology.
