China’s Geely launches 11 low-orbit satellites for autonomous cars
Chinese automaker and Volvo’s parent company Geely Holding Group announced on Saturday the launch of 11 satellites into low-earth orbit to enhance navigation precision for driverless cars. This marks its second launch as it aims to improve navigation accuracy for autonomous vehicles.
The news comes almost two years after the automotive giant conducted its first launch back in June 2022. In a statement shared with Reuters, the satellites took off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province. The company aims to have 72 satellites in orbit by 2025 and ultimately plans to establish a constellation of 240 satellites. The initial launch took place in June 2022.
In addition to supporting self-driving cars with high-precision positioning, Geely said the satellite network will also have applications in various commercial sectors, including connectivity to consumer electronics, Reuters reported. The satellites are equipped with AI remote sensing functions, offering clear high-resolution remote sensing imaging with a resolution of 1-5 meters (3.2-16.4 feet).
While China’s satellite networks have traditionally been dominated by the military, the government started allowing private investment in the space industry in 2014. Consequently, commercial companies, some with support from local governments, have entered the sector. Most are involved in satellite manufacturing, with others attempting to develop small launch vehicles, including reusable rockets.
As part of its 2021-2025 five-year plan, Beijing has called for the establishment of an integrated satellite network for communication, remote sensing, and navigation. According to state media, China currently has over 400 satellites deployed in space, including those owned by commercial entities.
Geely is the latest in a series of tech giants including Baidu, Amazon, and Alphabet working on autonomous driving in the race to develop smart cars.
Over the years, Geely has grown to become one of China’s largest privately owned automakers, diversifying its offerings with a range of automotive brands. In addition to Volvo, Geely’s portfolio includes well-known names like Lynk & Co, Polestar, Lotus Cars, and the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), previously known as The London Taxi Company. Each of these brands caters to different segments of the market, underscoring Geely’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Geely has been proactive in investing in electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous driving technology, and mobility services, positioning itself as a leader in the transition toward electrification and smart mobility solutions within the automotive industry. Beyond traditional manufacturing, Geely has also ventured into satellite technology, ride-hailing services, and urban air mobility, expanding its business horizons.
