The Chinese government is now using A.I. and 5G as mass surveillance tools to track all its citizens and monitor their every move
Back in March, we wrote a piece about how a small unknown tech startup is helping the Chinese government to deploy new AI facial recognition technology to surveil its citizens. It’s the first facial recognition technology that can identify people even when they wear masks.
Hanwang Technology Ltd, also known as Hanvon, said it has come up with technology that can successfully recognize people even when they are wearing masks. “If connected to a temperature sensor, it can measure body temperature while identifying the person’s name, and then the system would process the result, say if it detects a temperature over 38 degrees.”
Now, the Chinese government is moving beyond facial recognition technology. Working with China’s largest 5G smartphone maker, the Chinese government just rolled out 5G as a surveillance infrastructure to track and rank all citizens using A.I. The company also combines 5G with artificial intelligence to read human emotions.
First reported in 2018 by Business Insider, this mass surveillance system has since expanded dramatically in 2020 as a similar “Smart City” system is currently being planned for U.S. citizens. Students in China are now forced to wear headbands that record their electrical brain signals while China’s largest smartphone maker is working on an A.I. that can read human thoughts and emotions.
China is also using mass surveillance tools to monitor employees’ brain waves and emotions — and technology has boosted one company’s profits by $315 million. According to the report, the technology works by placing wireless sensors in employees’ caps or hats which, combined with artificial intelligence algorithms, spot incidents of workplace rage, anxiety, or sadness.
