OpenAI has shared its roadmap for the next generation of AI models, with GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 set to bring notable updates. GPT-4.5, known internally as Orion, will be the last iteration before a major shift in how these models process information. GPT-5 is expected to take a different approach, integrating multiple technologies to create a more unified system.
OpenAI unveils plans for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5: A simpler, smarter AI with unified intelligence
In an X post on Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined what’s next for the company’s AI models, giving a clearer picture of what to expect with GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. The focus? Making AI more intuitive and eliminating the confusing model selection process that users have been dealing with.
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
We hate…

No More Model Picker—Just Smarter AI
Altman acknowledged that OpenAI’s offerings have become more complicated than they should be. The goal now is to simplify everything and get rid of unnecessary choices that slow people down.
“We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” he said.
What’s Coming with GPT-4.5?
First up is GPT-4.5, which OpenAI has been calling “Orion” internally. This will be the last model that doesn’t use chain-of-thought reasoning. While details are still limited, the shift signals that OpenAI is moving toward models that can adjust their thinking based on the complexity of a task.
GPT-5 Will Change How OpenAI’s Models Work
Once GPT-4.5 is out, OpenAI will introduce GPT-5, a model that merges the capabilities of its GPT and o-series models. Instead of forcing users to pick the right model for each task, GPT-5 will handle everything in a single system. It will:
- Decide when to process tasks quickly or take more time for deeper reasoning
- Use OpenAI’s full range of tools without requiring manual selection
- Work across both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API
This shift also means OpenAI won’t be releasing o3 as a standalone model—its capabilities will be rolled into GPT-5 instead.
ChatGPT Is Getting an Upgrade—Even for Free Users
OpenAI is changing how access to its models works. The free version of ChatGPT will let users interact with GPT-5 at a standard intelligence level, though OpenAI will put limits in place to prevent misuse.
For those who want more advanced AI capabilities, there will be tiered options:
- Plus subscribers will get GPT-5 with a higher intelligence level
- Pro subscribers will get an even more advanced version with added features, including voice, a canvas interface, integrated search, and deep research tools
OpenAI’s Push for a More Seamless AI Experience
The takeaway? OpenAI wants to make its AI models easier to use and more effective. With GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, the company is betting on a system that feels more natural—one that doesn’t require users to figure out which model to pick but simply delivers the best response for any given task.
Altman’s update signals that OpenAI is shifting its focus from just making better models to making AI that integrates smoothly into everyday use. If it works as promised, this could be a big step toward AI that just works—no extra effort required.
