OpenAI officially launches Sora, ushering in a new era of AI video creation
Ten months after first teasing Sora, OpenAI’s innovative video-generation model, the company has officially launched it. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the launch of Sora, stating that the platform is now available alongside a new product designed to complement it.
In a post on X, Altman said that OpenAI Plus and Pro account holders can generate videos, while anyone can view them. He noted that the rollout would take some time but is expected to be fully available by the end of the day at sora.com.
we are launching sora today, and we made a new product to go with it.
if you have an openai plus or pro account, you can generate videos. anyone can view them.
it will take some time to roll out, but by the end of the day it should be available at https://t.co/VZBcJFqChS

Altman also highlighted what excites him most about Sora:
“One of the most exciting things to me about this product is how easy it is to co-create with others; it feels like an interesting new thing!
this is early–think of it like GPT-1 for video–but i already think the feed is so compelling. excited to see what you make :)”
How It Works
Sora is accessible to OpenAI Plus and Pro users. Here’s the breakdown:
- Plus Account: 50 video generations per month.
- Pro Account: 500 fast generations monthly (or fewer for higher resolution videos) and unlimited slower-generation options.
Availability
Sora is rolling out to many countries but isn’t yet available in most of Europe or the UK. OpenAI has not disclosed a timeline for expanding to these regions.
This launch marks an early step for OpenAI in video AI, with Sora already sparking curiosity about its creative possibilities. Users can expect to explore its capabilities further as the platform evolves.
Sora is capable of producing videos up to 60 seconds long, featuring intricate scenes, dynamic camera movements, and multiple characters expressing vivid emotions, OpenAI said in a February post on X.

Sora marks the latest stride in OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to advance the field of generative AI. While “multi-modal models” aren’t entirely novel, and text-to-video capabilities already exist, what distinguishes Sora, according to Reece Hayden, a senior analyst at ABI Research, is the claimed length and accuracy OpenAI asserts it possesses.
