Google to launch its Stadia game streaming service in November; to cost $9.99 a month for the pro edition
Three months ago, we wrote about Google’s Stadia, when the search giant unveiled its new game streaming platform that lets users play high-end games without consoles such as Nintendo’s Switch or Sony’s PlayStation. Today, Google has Google has shared more details, including pricing and a first slate of titles. According to the announcement, the streaming service will be launched in 14 countries this November at the cost $9.99 a month.
Stadia will be launched this November to users from 14 countries: U.S., Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, U.K. with at least 31 games from 21 different publishers. Google is working to expand to additional countries in 2020.
In a blog post by John Justice, Stadia Vice President of Product at Google, Google shared key details that were missing from its March announcement of the new Stadia game. According to the blog post, Google will ultimately have options for both subscription and subscription-free gaming, named Stadia Pro and Stadia Basic services respectively. However only the subscription service, Stadia Pro, is launching in November. The $9.99/month for the Stadia Pro service is however, not available to everyone. Instead, Google will be limiting access to the service to customers who purchase a $129 hardware and service bundle from the company, which Google calls the Stadia Founders Edition.
Stadia Founder’s Edition lets you instantly enjoy games in up to 4K on your TV1 without a console. You can also play across laptops, desktops, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3a2 with cross-screen early access starting from day one. Stadia’s Founder’s Edition gives Google’s first set of fans the highest quality gaming experience—you’ll get Stadia Pro and the ability to play your favorite games across multiple screens (for those of you with a 4K TV and Stadia Pro, you’ll get up to 4K HDR resolution at 60 frames per second with 5.1 surround sound). Stadia Pro will include free content, as well as discounts on titles you buy.
The first free title is “Destiny 2,” and it comes with the base game, all previous add-ons, the upcoming Shadowkeep expansion and the annual pass. And after your free 3-month subscription ends, Stadia Pro is only $9.99 per month. If you want to pick up an extra controller for multiplayer games, for your laptop or just to keep a spare in your backpack, they come in three colors—Just Black, Clearly White or Wasabi—for $69.99.
