Knowing About the Different Types of Crypto Debit Cards
When we walk into a store and pay with our debit card, we traditionally use fiat currency like the US dollar. In recent years, however, you can get a crypto debit card that links your cryptocurrency holdings and lets you spend them at merchants that may not otherwise accept crypto.
A crypto debit card can be more complicated than you realize, though. Before you sign up, make sure you know the different forms they come in. In the end, you will know you made the right choice and got the most out of your debit card.
Bitcoin Debit Card vs. Multi-Asset Cards
Bitcoin is the largest, most valuable, and most well-known cryptocurrency on the planet. It is a beast unto itself, and many card issuers will offer Bitcoin-only debit cards. This is exactly as it sounds: you can only use Bitcoin funds linked to your account.
Multi-asset cards are more commonplace now, however. You can use one of these cards and provide a payment hierarchy, drawing from various tokens in a single transaction. It helps to know which tokens are supported when you choose a multi-asset card; however, take time to do your homework before choosing.
Prepaid vs. Linked Wallet
Another important consideration is whether you want a prepaid crypto debit card or one tied to a linked wallet. The former involves loading money onto a card and only being allowed to spend what is on it. This is ideal for limiting losses and budgeting spending.
Linked wallet cards, meanwhile, allow you to pay using funds in your wallet or exchange account. When a transaction takes place, the crypto in your wallet is converted into fiat currency, and the transaction is processed. All of this happens in a handful of seconds.
Custodial vs. Non-Custodial
Custodial vs. non-custodial wallets is another distinction to know about. The former involves getting your card from a central platform, one that holds your funds and private keys for you. Most crypto card providers use this model.
Non-custodial cards, meanwhile, let you connect your card to your own digital wallet. This lets users maintain full ownership of their private keys and assets. Transactions convert to fiat currency at checkout, so third parties never hold your funds.
Cashback/Rewards Cards
A critical factor when choosing a crypto debit card is the rewards offered. Most card issuers offer rewards, but it is not guaranteed. Check the fine print before you decide to make sure you don’t get caught off guard.
For the most part, crypto debit card issuers will offer “cash” back in the form of crypto token rewards ranging from 1% to 8%. There are usually tiers as well, tied to things like staking or holding a minimum amount of tokens in your account when you sign up for the card.
Change the Way You Pay
With crypto debit and credit cards, you can change how you pay. While fiat currency is still the most widely accepted form of payment, crypto debit cards that link directly to your account offer more payment options and let you use your crypto holdings as you see fit.
