Meta hires MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead enterprise AI platform; MongoDB stock plunges 25%
Meta has hired MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead its new enterprise AI platform, a high-profile executive move that sent MongoDB shares plunging 25% and underscored Mark Zuckerberg’s push to turn Meta’s AI spending into business products.
Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to Zuckerberg. He will oversee the new Meta Enterprise Platform, expected to bring together a suite of AI tools for companies, including Meta’s Muse agent, a business agent, and a coding tool.
The appointment gives Meta an executive with deep experience selling technology to large companies at a moment when the social media giant is looking beyond consumer AI and advertising for its next major growth engine. In announcing the appointment, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said:
“Meta Enterprise Platform will use our strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses. Initially, we will focus on bringing our full technology stack, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, Muse Code, and more to businesses and developers to help them grow. To lead this effort, I’m excited that Chirantan “CJ” Desai will join Meta as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to me.
Zuckerberg said Meta plans to lean on “strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses.”
That combination points to a broader ambition. Meta is no longer treating AI agents as a side project or consumer feature. The company is building a business platform around them.
Meta’s enterprise AI push gets a new leader
Desai’s departure lands at a sensitive moment for MongoDB.
He became CEO in November 2025, succeeding Dev Ittycheria, who spent 11 years running the database software company. Less than a year later, Desai is leaving for one of the world’s largest technology companies.
MongoDB’s board has named Ittycheria interim president and CEO.
Investors reacted sharply. MongoDB shares fell about 25% following the announcement, wiping out a large chunk of the company’s market value in a single session. Meta shares declined roughly 4%, CNBC reported.
The selloff adds to an already difficult year for MongoDB, whose stock has lost nearly a quarter of its value in 2026.
Desai brings experience from several major infrastructure companies. Before becoming MongoDB CEO, he served as president of product and engineering at Cloudflare, giving him a background that fits Meta’s effort to build AI services for enterprise customers.
For Meta, the hire comes as investors keep pressing for evidence that years of enormous spending on AI chips, data centers, models, and software will produce substantial new revenue.
Enterprise AI may become one answer.
Meta has already pushed deeper into AI agents through Muse, its personal AI assistant, which has surged in consumer adoption and overtaken OpenAI’s ChatGPT among free iPhone apps.
The company now appears intent on bringing the same agent model into corporate environments, where businesses are racing to automate software development, customer support, internal workflows, and other tasks.
The timing puts Meta directly into a crowded contest involving OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, Salesforce, and a growing field of enterprise AI startups.
It comes as the broader AI industry faces another debate over how quickly autonomous systems should advance. Researchers and executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have called for greater caution amid concerns over safety and the growing ability of AI agents to act independently.
Meta is moving in the opposite commercial direction, placing another senior executive directly under Zuckerberg and giving enterprise AI its own organizational structure.
Desai’s move suggests Meta sees the business market as more than an extension of its consumer AI strategy.
It is becoming a separate bet of its own.
