Man arrested after Molotov cocktail attack on Sam Altman’s home, threatens to burn down OpenAI HQ
A quiet San Francisco street turned into a crime scene before sunrise. A man has been arrested after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman, setting part of the property on fire, and later threatening to burn down OpenAI’s headquarters, according to police.
The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. in North Beach, where officers responded to reports of a fire at Altman’s residence. Authorities say the suspect hurled what they described as an “incendiary destructive device” at the home, igniting a blaze on an exterior gate before fleeing the scene on foot.
No one was injured.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the attack, saying, “Thankfully, no one was hurt.”
Roughly an hour later, the situation escalated. Police responded to a separate call involving a man threatening arson at OpenAI’s office. Officers quickly connected the dots, identifying the individual as the same suspect linked to the earlier attack at Altman’s home, CNBC reported.
The suspect, a 20-year-old male, was taken into custody. Charges are still pending.
“We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe,” OpenAI said in its statement. “The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”
Attack on Sam Altman’s home and threats against OpenAI come amid rising tensions in AI race
The attack lands at a tense moment for Altman and OpenAI, a company that has moved from research lab to one of the most closely watched forces in tech.
In recent months, OpenAI has drawn criticism after entering into a deal with the United States Department of Defense, a move that has sparked internal debate and public protests. Activists have targeted the company’s offices with messages urging employees to speak out.
At the same time, OpenAI is locked in a high-stakes race with rival Anthropic, as both AI startups chase dominance in large language models. The stakes are massive. Together, they carry valuations that stretch into the trillion-dollar range in private markets, even as both continue to burn through billions in pursuit of scale.
Pressure is building on another front. Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, is suing the company and Altman, accusing him of misleading him into contributing $38 million under the belief that OpenAI would remain a nonprofit. Musk is pushing for Altman’s removal as CEO in a case expected to head to trial soon.
Against that backdrop, Friday’s attack adds a more immediate concern: safety.
For now, authorities say the suspect is in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
