Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit Waymo is in talks with investors on a funding round that could value the company at around $100 billion, according to multiple reports published Tuesday. People familiar with the discussions say the raise could reach into the billions, with some estimates climbing past $10 billion, and possibly higher.
“Waymo is in early talks with potential investors to raise more money at a valuation of at least $100 billion, The Information reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The final valuation is still in flux, with discussions expected to come together early next year. Bloomberg reported that Waymo may seek more than $15 billion in new capital, with its parent company, Alphabet, leading the round. Alphabet and Waymo have yet to comment publicly on the reports.
Waymo traces its roots back to Google’s self-driving car project, which Alphabet spun out into a standalone unit in 2016. Nearly a decade later, it stands alone in one key respect. Waymo remains the only company in the United States running paid robotaxi services without safety drivers or in-car attendants. Its fleet now tops 2,500 vehicles operating across select markets.
The timing highlights how sharply investor attention has shifted toward autonomy. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said this week that the Company has begun testing robotaxis without safety monitors in the front passenger seat, a milestone that feeds into broader expectations about the company’s future. Much of Tesla’s $1.53 trillion market value rests on confidence in its self-driving roadmap and longer-term robotics ambitions.
Alphabet, valued at roughly $3.73 trillion, has the balance sheet to anchor Waymo’s next phase. A funding round of nearly $100 billion would place Waymo among the most valuable private technology companies ever and signal that autonomous mobility has moved from long-term research into a high-stakes commercial race with real revenue on the line.
