Metronet acquires US Internet to boost fiber reach in Minneapolis following T-Mobile buyout

Metronet is wasting no time making moves after its recent buyout by a T-Mobile–KKR joint venture. The company announced today it has acquired US Internet (USI), a Minneapolis-based pure-play fiber provider that has been laying the groundwork for high-speed connectivity in the region for three decades.
USI, headquartered in Minnetonka, operates a 100% fiber network that delivers symmetrical speeds up to 10 Gbps. Its footprint covers more than 140,000 homes and businesses across Minneapolis, giving Metronet a sizable boost in one of the Midwest’s most competitive broadband markets.
“USI is the premier independent fiber provider in Minneapolis with a tremendous reputation, and we are so proud that it is becoming part of the Metronet family,” said David Heimbach, Metronet’s CEO. “Their coverage map complements Metronet’s own footprint in the greater Minneapolis area, creating a strong strategic fit as we continue to accelerate the expansion of our network.”
The acquisition represents more than just added coverage—it marks a key step in Metronet’s Minnesota ambitions. The company already serves nearby communities, including Lakeville, Waconia, and Shakopee, with a growing presence further south in Owatonna, Faribault, and Rochester.
For USI, the deal closes a chapter that began 30 years ago with the mission to deliver state-of-the-art connectivity to Minneapolis residents. “Being a part of the Metronet and T-Mobile Fiber families means that our customers will stay on the cutting edge of internet speeds and service, backed by Metronet’s strong fiber network and T-Mobile’s legendary customer service,” said Travis Carter, USI’s co-founder and CEO.
Under the terms of Metronet’s recent sale, T-Mobile Fiber is taking over sales, marketing, and the customer experience for residential subscribers. That transition now extends to USI’s residential base, which will shift to T-Mobile Fiber in the coming months. USI’s commercial accounts will fall under Metronet’s commercial division.
Metronet, which has been building fiber networks since 2005, currently reaches more than 2.6 million homes and businesses across 19 states. With the backing of T-Mobile and KKR, the company is expanding at one of the fastest clips in the industry, often launching construction in dozens of cities at once.
For Minneapolis, the deal signals an intensifying fiber race—one where Metronet, powered by T-Mobile Fiber, is positioning itself as the frontrunner.
