Elon Musk confirms massive cyberattack on X by nation-state or coordinated group

X (formerly Twitter) was hit by a major cyberattack on March 10, 2025, leading to significant service disruptions. Users began noticing issues as early as 6:00 AM Eastern Time, with reports peaking at about 41,000 incidents by 10:00 AM, according to Downdetector. Both the X app and website were affected, leaving many users unable to access the platform.
Targeted Cyberattack Hits X: Elon Musk Points to Nation-State or Coordinated Group
Elon Musk confirmed the attack in a post on X, saying, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.” His statement points to the scale and seriousness of the situation.

The hacker group Dark Storm Team claimed responsibility for the Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. The group, which surfaced in 2023, has been linked to various attacks and is known for aligning with pro-Palestinian sentiments. Some reports also suggest possible connections to Ukraine or Russia. Their strategy typically involves overwhelming websites with heavy traffic to disrupt services.
Throughout the day, X experienced multiple disruptions. At least three major outages were reported, with the most severe happening between 11:15 AM and 1:15 PM Eastern Time. Users faced frequent buffering and error messages, making it difficult to use the platform during those hours.
X’s technical team has been actively working to mitigate the effects of the attack and restore stable service. While X has faced cyber threats in the past, the scale and coordination of this particular incident have sparked concerns about the involvement of state-sponsored actors or well-organized groups. Investigations are ongoing to identify the source and enhance the platform’s defenses.
This attack adds to the growing list of security challenges faced by social media platforms, highlighting the pressing need for stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard digital spaces.
