Belfast-based Pilates startup Reform Rx raises $5.1M in funding to fuel global expansion
Pilates has become increasingly popular for its combination of strength training, flexibility, and balance, offering a comprehensive approach to fitness and well-being. Its focus on core strength, alignment, and the mind-body connection makes it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
Now, Reform RX, a Belfast, Northern Ireland-based tech startup is taking Pilates to a new level with personalized, digitally connected reformers. The company recently secured $5.1M in funding, led by Clarendon Fund Managers, marking the largest initial investment for a Northern Ireland company under Clarendon. This funding will support Reform RX’s global expansion and further development of its patented technology aimed at refining the Pilates experience.
Founded in 2018 by Yvette McGaffin, a functional movement specialist, and Neal McGaffin, Reform RX started after their success running boutique Pilates studios across the UK. Partnering with Grove Design, the team created a next-generation Pilates reformer, combining cutting-edge tech and sleek design. Their RX reformer generated $1M in revenue within two weeks of launch, selling out the initial product line in the first quarter of 2023.
The Reform RX reformer, the first major innovation in the industry in 50 years, blends traditional Pilates techniques with advanced tracking technology. It captures movement down to a fraction of a second, offering users real-time biometric feedback for an unparalleled experience.
Yvette McGaffin, CEO and co-founder, expressed excitement about the new investment, emphasizing the company’s mission to deepen the connection between physical fitness and mental clarity. The reformer isn’t just about exercise; it’s about creating a space for both body and mind to thrive. This personalized approach is key to their vision.
“This significant investment will allow us to accelerate our global expansion and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in Pilates,” says Yvette McGaffin, CEO and co-founder of Reform RX.
“At Reform RX, our mission is to transform the way people work out, guiding them beyond physical fitness to a deeper mind-body connection with themselves. By integrating mindful movement and mental clarity, we empower individuals to master the essential skill of emptying the mind, fostering resilience and calm amidst the noise of modern life. It’s not just about fitness; it’s about creating a sanctuary within where body and mind thrive together. Through partnering with Clarendon Fund Managers and completing the Investment Fund for Northern Ireland deal, we are taking the next step in our company’s growth.”
With the ability to stream on-demand classes, sync with wearables, and track workout metrics, the Reform RX reformer is designed to fit seamlessly into a variety of spaces, from boutique studios to homes. Industry veterans like Sam Bowen, formerly of Peloton, and Frank van de Ven, previously with Life Fitness, are helping to guide the company’s evolution.
Reform RX is also gaining traction in the entertainment world, with high-profile clients, including “Game of Thrones” producer Bernadette Caulfield, who has trained with Yvette for years and is now an investor.
“I’m thrilled to continue investing in Reform RX and to be part of this incredible journey. Pilates has always been a passion of mine, and it has been a privilege to train personally with Yvette for years. Seeing the growth of Reform RX and knowing how many others are benefiting from Yvette and her team’s expertise is truly inspiring,” Caulfield said.
The company operates out of Belfast, where they produce all content for their RX platform, and also runs a boutique studio in Newport Beach, CA. Their reformer is available in 13 countries and continues to expand worldwide.
