OpenAI partners with Stack Overflow to supercharge developer experience
OpenAI and Stack Overflow are joining forces to enhance the capabilities of AI tools and provide developers with a reliable and verified data infrastructure. Through access to Stack Overflow’s OverflowAPI, OpenAI users and customers will gain access to a wealth of accurate and vetted information, enabling them to swiftly address technical challenges while maintaining focus on their primary objectives.
As part of the agreement, Stack Overflow will grant OpenAI access to over 15 years’ worth of technical inquiries and responses through the platform’s API. This move marks a significant stride in enhancing OpenAI’s GPT model, as it will be fortified with a robust foundation of real-world coding dilemmas and resolutions. Notably, OpenAI pledges to integrate a feature attributing answers directly to their original authors on Stack Overflow, thereby acknowledging and honoring their contributions within the AI ecosystem.
In addition, OpenAI will integrate validated technical knowledge from Stack Overflow directly into its ChatGPT platform, ensuring users have easy access to trustworthy and attributed information amassed over 15 years by millions of developers on Stack Overflow.
The collaboration will “bring best-in-class technical knowledge and the world’s most popular LLM models for AI development together,” Stack Overflow said in a post on X.

OpenAI will harness Stack Overflow’s OverflowAPI product to refine model performance for developers, facilitating an exchange of insights and feedback within the developer community. Additionally, OpenAI will attribute Stack Overflow content within ChatGPT, fostering deeper engagement and collaboration.
Conversely, Stack Overflow will incorporate OpenAI models into the development of OverflowAI, leveraging internal testing insights to optimize model performance. This collaboration underscores OpenAI’s commitment to leveraging collective knowledge to advance technology development.
Brad Lightcap, COO at OpenAI, emphasized the importance of learning from diverse sources to ensure inclusivity in model development, particularly highlighting the significance of the developer community in this endeavor.
“Learning from as many languages, cultures, subjects, and industries as possible ensures that our models can serve everyone. The developer community is particularly important to both of us. Our deep partnership with Stack Overflow will help us enhance the user and developer experience on both our platforms,” Lightcap said.
Prashanth Chandrasekar, CEO of Stack Overflow, emphasized the platform’s status as the premier developer community and its commitment to enhancing the developer experience through community-driven initiatives and AI advancements.
“Stack Overflow is the world’s largest developer community, with more than 59 million questions and answers. Through this industry-leading partnership with OpenAI, we strive to redefine the developer experience, fostering efficiency and collaboration through the power of community, best-in-class data, and AI experiences,” Chandrasekar noted. “Our goal with OverflowAPI, and our work to advance the era of socially responsible AI, is to set new standards with vetted, trusted, and accurate data that will be the foundation on which technology solutions are built and delivered to our user.”
The initial integrations and enhancements resulting from this partnership are slated for release in the first half of 2024, with ongoing collaboration aimed at further enriching the developer community experience on both platforms.
