Lief takes its name from the Middle English term “lief”, meaning a beloved person or a friend. Just like how a friend cares about you, Lief gives a biofeedback mechanism to sync your breathing to your own heart beat, helping you focus on what matters most and keep stress at a minimum. It works by increasing your natural heart rate variability (HRV), which is a clear indicator of your health. Its slim form – just only 6mm thin – attaches under your clothing for a discreet and comfortable fit. While attached, Lief monitors your heart rate in real time, and gives you a vibrating haptic feedback to let you know that it’s time to take a deep breath.
It requires no intervention at all – just put it on your torso and it will automatically work for you. It reads your heart beat and decides when it is the right time to unwind and take a break. The subtle, quiet vibration is the only indicator you’ll need to reduce your stress levels whenever needed. There are four biofeedback exercise modes available on Lief, which you can choose depending on your stress reduction goals. Each vibration routine called “doses” lasts for 3 minutes, providing you enough time to balance your stress levels while not being intrusive to your tasks.
Working hand in hand with the Lief patch, the Lief mobile app was developed with the support of Stanford and UCSF clinicians to enhance your overall well-being even further. The app reads your HRV readings from the Lief patch as well as your heart rate, and records these information right on the app to give suggestions on how you can further improve your well-being. Built-in self-regulation toolkit and audio exercises aid in giving you ways to untangle your negative thinking patterns. It also neatly organizes Lief patch data and toolkit findings and presents a user-friendly overview of your body’s health status with regards to stress levels.
